    Introduction

The Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital has its beginnings in the 1990’s and was settled into the the first floor of the 10-story medical building. The professionals here expertly manage patients with a wide variety of conditions and disabilities. Our resources enable us to provide a full range of services for patients while offering a number of uniquely specialized programs. Our experienced physiatrists, nurses and therapists, many of whom specialize in selected areas, as CVA, TBI, SCI, cardiac and pulmonary, pediatric, musculoskeletal, return to work, and pain management, offer optimum patient care. We consistently train some of the strongest residents in the nation, and have alumni throughout the academic and private world. Our mission is to provide exceptional rehabilitation for our patients through clinical excellence and compassionate care, all dedicated to helping patients achieve their maximum functional capacity and highest quality of life.

The KVGH Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation offers a full spectrum of services for individuals with a wide range of disabilities and musculoskeletal problems. Each patient is evaluated by a physiatrist, who then works with the referring physician and the rehabilitation team to design and implement an individualized plan of care. This level of individual attention is necessary to ensure the best possible treatment for patients with a broad range of disabilities.

The physiatric evaluation is a comprehensive inventory of the whole person in the contexts of physical illness, family/home life, and society. The evaluation includes functional assessment, exercise prescription, evaluation for adaptive equipment, contracture prevention, skin management, bowel/bladder management, workplace and home modification, recommendations for family education and training, and prognosis of ultimate outcome. Patients are referred for appropriate therapy services and, if necessary, may be accepted for admission to one of our comprehensive inpatient rehabilitation facilities for further treatment.
