Nutrition and Food Service Department welcomes you to the Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital at the southern of Taiwan, ROC. Nutrition is an important part of maintaining a healthy lifestyle and our goal is to promote patient’s overall nutritional status. The department consists of “Clinical Nutrition” and “Food Service” sections, which has a staff of 86 full-time employees managed by 17 highly skilled and dedicated dietitians. It is progressive and fully committed to providing the highest quality nutritional care, food service and education to patients, staff and students.
Mission
To provide optimal nutritional care and nutritious meals to the hospital community through our expertise and leadership in:
- medical nutrition therapy and preventive care
- food service management
- developing sound eating habits through education
- nutrition research
Clinical Nutrition Section
Our staff of 11 registered dietitians provides clinical nutrition services to all inpatients as well as serving an active outpatient setting such as medical nutrition therapy, nutritional counseling, individual and group diet instruction/education, diabetes program, weight management program and so on.
- Inpatient nutrition consultation
We work cooperatively with both physicians and other healthcare professionals in an attempt to promote the nutritional well being of the patients, and offer diet instructions to individuals with medical conditions require specific diets. A physician’s note is required to begin nutritional counseling. If patients have any diet or nutrition-related concerns, they may also make an individual appointment with dietitian to resolve their problems.
- Outpatient diet counseling
We provide diet instruction/education to the patients who are concerned with the special nutrition needs related to their illnesses.

Food Service Section
3 management dietitians, managing the Food Service Section, are in charge of planning food programs and of supervising the purchasing, the preparation and the serving of meals. Our dietary staff receives ongoing training in food safety regularly. It provides high quality food for approximately 2800 meals per day including regular, vegetarian, infant formula and over 50 kinds of therapeutic diets. When patients first come to the hospital, the physicians order diets for them consistent with their medical histories and current medical conditions. It is important to let the nursing staffs know if patients have any food allergies, preferences, or other special needs so that the food is served to their satisfaction. Patients preferring a different diet can always talk to their physicians or dietitians and possibly change the diet orders.
