Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital Intelligent & Telemedicine Center
Mission Statement
Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital (hereinafter referred to as "the Hospital") aims to promote remote healthcare services by integrating existing units specializing in teleconsultation. The establishment of the Telemedicine and Remote Healthcare Center is designed to enhance and expand the scope of remote healthcare services.
Organizational Objectives
- Establish and develop information system platforms for remote healthcare operations to meet the needs of home, institutional, and hospital-based telecare, promoting their widespread use.
- Develop comprehensive telehealth consulting, teleconsultation, home telecare, and other remote healthcare services.
- Utilize fifth-generation mobile communication technology (5G), digital devices, and ICT development for remote healthcare.
- Integrate cross-team efforts and hardware-software combinations to advance research and innovation in remote healthcare.
- Undertake other remote healthcare-related tasks delegated by hospitals.
The development of telemedicine in Taiwan not only helps improve healthcare access for remote populations facing shortages of medical resources and specialized care but also reduces the hardships associated with travel for medical treatment. The Hospital is committed to integrating resources and expanding healthcare services to benefit more individuals in need.
Currently, the Hospital provides remote healthcare services including 24-hour telemedical consultations for veterans through the Emergency Department, and mobile medical services in remote areas of Kaohsiung and Pingtung by the Department of Family Medicine. Specialized consultations in ophthalmology, otolaryngology, dermatology, and other fields are also offered via telemedicine, ensuring access to specialized medical advice for residents in remote areas. Additionally, remote pharmaceutical services allow video consultations with pharmacists to enhance medication safety.
Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital collaborates with Far Eastern Memorial Hospital in providing telemedicine consultation services. Through the telemedicine platform, services are extended to remote maritime personnel, overseas residents (Taiwanese business people), domestic company employees stationed abroad, and business travelers, offering remote medical consultation services.
As Taiwan prepares to enter an ultra-aging society by 2025, the demand for healthcare services is expected to rise. The rapid development of information technology such as telemedicine, combined with convenient medical measures like virtual health insurance cards, electronic prescriptions, and diversified electronic payments, is believed to gradually increase public acceptance and utilization of telemedicine, making future healthcare more aligned with people's lives and needs.
