    The Ophthalmic department of Kaohsiung Veterans General Hospital has been established and served as a main tertiary referral center in southern Taiwan for nineteen years. At present, we have seven major subspecialties, including neuro-ophthalmology/pediatric ophthalmology, oculoplasty, cornea and general ophthalmology, glaucoma, uveitis, optics and refraction, and vitreoretinal ophthalmology. There are twelve full-time staffs and two visiting staffs. The department is equipped with all classic and modern ophthalmic machines and instruments, such as Excimer laser, Femtosecond laser, argon laser, multiwave laser, Nd-Yag laser, Diode laser, digital system for fundus and angiogram, perimetry, topography, tonometer, refractometer, OCT, OCTA, EOG, ERG, VEP, vitrectomy, cryotherapy, slit and surgical microscope, endoscopy ….. With qualified staffs and modern equipment, we provide comprehensive medical and surgical cares of patients, including corneal ulcer, uveitis, glaucoma, vaso-occlusive disease, diabetic retinopathy, age-related macular degeneration, optic neuropathy, cataract surgery, refractive surgery, retinal detachment, trauma, corneal transplantation, strabismus, lacrimal apparatus disease, and orbital tumor. Meanwhile, we are also one of the leading hospitals performing current new therapies in Taiwan, such as IVI, photodynamic therapy, Lasik, pneumopexy/tPA for submacular hemorrhage, radial optic neuropathy and so on. The staffs are always willing and ready for the new progress of treatment.
    As the leading medical center in southern Taiwan, we focus not only on clinical service, but also on teaching and research. We offer a conscientious residency-training program for the next generation of physicians in medical and surgical Ophthalmology. The pass rate for board examination is 100% so far. Plenty of basic and clinical research have been done and published in domestic and international journal, as well as textbooks. Our current issues are focused on anti-angiogenesis in eye disease, nucleotide polymorphisms in corneal disease, and diabetes induced cataract related research.
