Introduction to the Division of Gastroenterology

The Division of Gastroenterology was set up in 1990 while the Hospital was founded. For many years, with limited manpower and budget, we have gradually introduced various new technologies into diagnoses and therapies in order to benefit more patients. And as a result, we have earned a good reputation. Besides patient care, the Division’s responsibilities involve panendoscopy (including upper GI endoscopy, jejunofiberoscopy, colonoscopy, capsule endoscopy, endoscopic therapies for gastro-esophageal varices, therapeutic endoscopy for GI bleeding, and polypectomy, etc.), abdominal ultrasonography (including general ultrasonography, ultrasound-guided liver biopsy, ultrasound-guided percutaneous ethanol or acetic acid injection, etc.), and biliary tract examination (such as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography, sphincterotomy, balloon dilatation, biliary stenting, endoscopic nasobiliary drainage, manometry, endoscopic ultrasonography examination and treatment, etc.)

The focus of training the residents and interns of the Division is aimed to help them to diagnose and treat different gastroenterological diseases, attend to inpatients, have excellent knowledge of the procedures and reading pertaining to the GI imaging. Furthermore, we hold case discussions in the morning meeting, literature readings, mortality cases discussions, endoscopy & imaging reading seminars, and combined meeting with General Surgery, Radiology and Pathology. Simultaneously, the Division is a training unit, in accordance with training rules of Gastroenterology Society of Taiwan, turning the sub-specialists of gastroenterology into gastroenterologists with expertise. We also encourage the trained physicians to participate in academic lecture and seminars internally and externally to broaden their horizons.

Led by Dr. Cheng, the Deputy Superintendent of our hospital, and Dr. Chen, head of the Gastroenterology Division, the research ambience is thriving. And there have been great advances, especially in the aspects of gastroesophageal varices therapy, endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and relevant therapies, ultrasound-guided percutaneous ethanol or acetic acid intratumor injection, and the research of Helicobacter pylori. Lots of excellent theses of the Division have been published on different leading medical journals domestically or abroad and quoted by many scholars.

In this division, inpatients per month exceed 300 and outpatients 5000. Every month, the number of cases of general URI endoscopy is approximately 1000, upper abdominal sonography 400, and colonoscopy 150. For more than ten years since the establishment, this Division has been distinguishing in the field of gastroenterology on southern Taiwan due to all staff’s endeavors. In the future, in addition to making continuous efforts based on the current achievement, improving comprehensively the quality of service in clinical medicine, making a breakthrough in technology and devoting to the training and medical research are required in order to serve more patients and promote the health of hepatobiliary and gastrointestinal tracts of entire society.
